When you imagine the schedule of a successful person, do you picture a morning routine and an afternoon full of meetings? That may be true for some, but for others, what they do right before bed can have even more of an impact.
Being the CEO of two Tungsten companies, I, Darryl Hicks, know a lot about being successful (not to brag or anything). I know that scheduling your time properly is one of the most important things to do. That includes from the moment you open your eyes, until you turn off the lights at night.
There are a lot of helpful nighttime routines you could start, but for now, let’s name six:
- Read Important Stuff
It’s hard to overstate the benefits of regular reading. It reduces stress by 60%. As you age, it reduces cognitive decline by 32%. You gain new knowledge, and it stimulates different areas of your brain. If you want to stimulate yourself logically, read up on politics or current events. If you’re looking to become more creative, pick up a good fiction book. Read every night before bed, for about an hour if your schedule allows for it, and you will be seeing benefits across the board in no time.
2. Go Back 100 Years
I don’t mean literally. I mean, separate yourself from technology. Unplug. Take your phone, your laptop, or anything that can create a noise or distraction, and put it in a different room. The science behind it is, anything that creates a light can trick your brain into thinking it’s daytime, throwing off your circadian rhythm. You can have a much harder time falling asleep, and we all know how important a good night’s sleep is.
3. Make Time to Think
Nightly meditation can be great for relieving stress, anxiety, pain, or confusion, especially if it’s not yet part of your morning routine. We think differently at night than we do in the morning, so you will get different results depending on the time. Either way, meditating to clear your head before bed can help you sleep better.
4. Walk and Get Some Fresh Air
A little exercise can help wear you out, making you more tired and helping you fall asleep faster. It’ll also help work off those calories you took from dinner (especially if you ate late), keeping you slim and healthy. Other studies prove that, while you’re walking, your mind is free to wander, similar to meditation. This can promote the free-flow of creative ideas. Which brings us to the next one:
5. Be Creative
Studies have shown, our minds are at their most creative at night. That’s because we’re not as logical. The logic-portion of our minds begins to shut down once we start feeling tired. This opens the way for less-logical, more creative ideas to flow, which your brain’s ad-blocker would have stopped from reaching your consciousness otherwise. Thus, a creative block is best broken at night.
6. Plan the Next Day
I have already written a piece about how writing down your plans and goals for the next day, with intention, means you’re twice as likely to realize those goals. In short, choose two or three things you want to accomplish the next day, write them down in a place you’ll see them again, and include when you will do them. When the time comes, you’ll feel more motivated to get it done, and you’ll feel much more satisfaction from your day as a result.
