Imagine you woke up one day, and everybody was complimenting you.
Your roommates or friends came up, wanting to tell you how great it was
being your friend, and how they looked forward to spending time with
you. Then your boss called you into his office, and said how you’re not
only his best worker, but you’re funny, smart, and an overall pleasure
to be around.
Then on your way home, you run into another person, like a date
from last night, who tells you how much fun they had, and how jealous
their friends are that they got to go out with someone so great.
Wouldn’t your self-esteem rise at least a little from such a
wonderful day? It should. Here’s the thing; so long as you keep it in
check, having good self-esteem can actually make you more successful.
My name is Darryl Hicks, CEO of Tungsten Revenue Consultants and
Flexpay, and Co-Founder of Tungsten Solutions. A positive self-image
helped me get this far, and it can help you too.
Positivity
Obviously, I wasn’t always this self-confident. Not everyone was.
The problem was, it didn’t motivate me to try very hard. In other words,
if you have a good self-image, you’re more motivated to maintain that
image. It can awaken a competitive nature in you.
Think about it this way. What if your classmates in school always
talked about how you were the smartest kid? Not only would you get
yourself known (I’m sure classmates would come to you for help and
everything), but you’d be working harder to maintain that image. You’d
be studying harder for every test; if you failed, it would go around the
school, and you’d lose the reputation you worked so hard to earn.
The same translates into your career. If a florist in town is known
for growing the biggest roses, not only will they work hard to maintain
that image, but they will advertise it. But the first step comes from
realizing it. First, the florist must realize they are good at growing
roses. I had to realize I was good with computers, finances, and working
with people.
So, ask yourself; what are you the best at? What can you do better
than anyone you know? Before you start doubting yourself, it doesn’t
have to be true. You just have to believe it’s true. Don’t just become
so self-absorbed in your ability that you become narcissistic and push
people away. Work to find the perfect amount of confidence.
So if you have something you’re good at, or something you want to
do, practice it until you believe you’re the best at it, and you will be
successful at it.
